In 1991, Villanova basketball star Shelly Pennefather turned down an overseas contract that would make her one of the world’s richest female players. She decided instead to pursue a radical path. Pennefather joined one of the strictest religious sects in the world, a choice that has come with unimaginable commitment and sacrifice. This past June, 28 years since entering the monastery, Pennefather (now Sister Rose Marie) had her first physical contact with loved ones. The next time she’ll be able to do so will be in 25 years.
